Vintage Our Lady of Sorrows / Virgo Septem Dolorosum / Mater Dolorosa Chaplet Rosary
The medals on this 17 1/2" vintage chaplet illustrate the Seven Sorrows of Mary---
The Prophecy of Simeon,
The Flight into Egypt,
The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple,
Mary meeting Jesus on the Via Dolorosa,
The Crucifixion of Jesus on Mount Calvary, Jesus Taken down from the Cross, and The Burial of Jesus.
The end medal shows the "Virgo Septem Dolorsum" (Latin for
Virgin of the Seven Sorrows
) with 7 swords piercing Mary's heart. The reverse shows the Crucifixion with "Pro nobis mortuus est" (
He died for us
.) There is a tiny diamond-shape maker's mark on the medals (see close-up), but it's too tiny to really see. I think this chaplet might be French.
The medals are a lightweight metal (aluminum?), and the beads are black. I can't figure out what the beads are made of (see pictures).
It is in good preowned vintage condition with some age wear.
